Frequently Asked Questions about Group Workshops and Private Pottery Experiences
Do I need any pottery experience?
Not at all! My workshops are designed with complete beginners in mind and no previous experience is necessary. I'll guide you through every step of the process, helping you build confidence as you learn. Many of my potters have never touched clay before and are often amazed by what they create during their first session. In contrast, others come to my sessions having had some experience and want to try making something different. The key is that everyone is welcome and the workshops are designed for all.
I'm not very creative. Will I still enjoy it?
Absolutely! In fact, many of my budding potters say exactly the same thing before they arrive. Pottery isn't about being artistic - it's about enjoying the process, trying something new and having fun. You'll be guided every step of the way and everyone leaves feeling pleasantly surprised by what they've achieved. The smiles at the end of a workshop are often just as rewarding as the pottery itself.
What should I wear?
Pottery can be a bit messy, so we recommend wearing comfortable clothing that you don't mind getting a little clay on. Most of the time you will be seated and also bring an apron with you.
Can I come on my own?
Absolutely. Many people attend on their own and quickly feel at home in the relaxed, friendly atmosphere. Pottery is a wonderfully mindful activity and you'll often find yourself chatting with other people while creating your pieces. Whether you come alone, with a friend or as part of a group, you'll receive plenty of individual guidance.
How many people are in each group workshop?
Workshops are intentionally kept small to ensure everyone receives personal tuition and plenty of time to get creative. Small group sizes also create a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere where everyone can enjoy the experience at their own pace.
Private pottery experiences take place in Bramley Pottery Studio and are for a maximum of three people on the wheel and four people for a slab-build session.
What will I make?
This depends on the workshop you've booked.
During hand-building workshops, you'll make the featured project, such as mugs, bowls, jugs, vases or seasonal decorations. Every piece is completely unique and reflects your own creativity.
Do I get to keep what I make?
Yes. After your workshop, I'll carefully dry, bisque fire, glaze and re-fire your pottery in the kiln. Your finished pieces will then be ready for collection approximately four to six weeks later. This allows plenty of time for each stage of the firing process to ensure the best possible results.
Where do I collect my finished pottery?
When your pottery is ready for collection I will contact you to let you know. Collection will be from my pottery studio in Ballinger, near Great Missenden, and you will be able to collect at a time that suits you. Pottery is usually kept for a maximum of 6 months after collection notification.
Can I choose the glaze colour?
Yes. At the end of your workshop, you'll be able to choose from a selection of beautiful glaze colours. I'll then glaze your work before firing it. Every glaze reacts slightly differently in the kiln, making each finished piece unique.
How long are the workshops?
Workshop lengths vary depending on the experience you've chosen. Group hand-building workshops vary depending on the project. The duration of each workshop is clearly shown on the booking page.
Is everything included in the price?
Yes. The workshop fee includes all clay, tools, equipment, tuition, glazing, kiln firings and refreshments. There are no hidden costs, so you can simply relax and enjoy the experience.
Are refreshments provided?
Yes. Complimentary tea, coffee and light refreshments are provided during your workshop, giving you the chance to relax and enjoy the creative atmosphere.
If you have any food allergies, intolerances or dietary requirements, please let me know before your workshop. I'll do my very best to accommodate your needs wherever possible, ensuring you can enjoy your visit comfortably and safely.
Where are your group workshops located?
These are held at Great Missenden Memorial Hall in Great Missenden, South Buckinghamshire.
Is there parking available?
Yes. Parking is available, making it easy to arrive and unload if you're bringing friends or family.
Is the workshops studio accessible?
If you have any mobility requirements or accessibility questions, please get in touch before booking. I'll be happy to discuss your needs and do everything possible to make your visit comfortable and enjoyable.

For group workshops, all under 18 participants need to be accompanied by a full paying adult. Please contact me before booking to discuss.
Can I book a private group workshop?

What happens if I need to cancel?
Please refer to our booking terms and conditions for our cancellation policy. If you need to change your booking, get in touch as soon as possible and I'll always do my best to accommodate you where I can.
What if my pottery breaks during firing?
Clay is a natural material and, although breakages are very uncommon, they can occasionally happen during drying or firing. Every piece is handled with great care throughout the process. If something unexpected does happen, I'll discuss the options with you.
